Estimated Total Landed Cost
Assessment Breakdown
- Duty ($21.60 CAD): Assessed at 18.0% tariff for Apparel & Clothing.
- Provincial Tax ($18.41 CAD): Assessed at 13% HST on the value of goods ($141.60 CAD).
- Carrier Brokerage Fee ($9.95 CAD): Charged by Canada Post (USPS / Foreign Postal) for customs entry clearance representation.
How to Avoid High Brokerage Fees
Standard courier ground services (like UPS Standard) charge $30–$70 in customs entry preparation fees for parcels over $40 CAD. Shippers can avoid these fees by choosing Canada Post / USPS (flat $9.95 CAD handling) or an Air Express tier (customs clearance included).
De Minimis Thresholds
Under CUSMA, courier imports from the US/Mexico are duty-free up to $150 CAD and tax-free up to $40 CAD. Postal shipments via Canada Post retain the standard $20 CAD threshold.
Tax Calculation Base
In Canada, GST/HST is applied to the Duty-Paid Value (Value of goods + Duty assessed). Shipping charges paid to foreign sellers are generally excluded from CBSA duty assessment.
Self-Clearing Option
Canadian recipients have the legal right to "self-clear" high-value courier packages at their local CBSA Inland Office to pay only the true tax/duty and eliminate courier brokerage fees.
